Landscape and epic

Mount Sampo stands beside Lake Konchezero. The ethnopark introduces figures from the Kalevala epic, including the magical Sampo mill. Mythology provides a theme for the walk rather than proof of an event on a particular rock. Explore the figures along the route before continuing to an open viewpoint over the lake and forest.

Time and opening hours

Allow 45–60 minutes for an unhurried independent stop. The park lists 09:00–18:00 for October–April and 09:00–20:00 for May–September, checked on 28 October 2026. Recheck before travelling. Guided visits have their own duration and need advance booking. Plan the driving day so that the walk takes place in daylight.

Approach and ascent

Sampo fits a drive from Petrozavodsk via Kosalma towards Martsialnye Vody. Navigate to the ethnopark entrance rather than the summit point. The walk includes a climb; a short distance does not establish wheelchair or pushchair access. Ask the operator about your needs. Assess steps after rain or frost and respect closures when taking photographs.

Continuing your trip

Continue with the history of Martsialnye Vody. Include Girvas and Kivach only with an early start, confirmed hours and enough daylight. On a short winter day, choose two main stops and save the others for another outing. The relaxed two-day version pairs Sampo with the historic resort, followed by Girvas geology and Kivach waterfall on day two.
