Martsialnye Vody: Peter I and Russia’s first spa resort
Springs, a wooden church and a museum of spa history in the Kondopoga area.

From a spring to a resort
The museum links the spring’s discovery in 1714 to worker Ivan Reboyev. Peter I visited the new resort in 1719 and returned several times. The story reveals state interest in natural resources and European spa culture. It is a subject for a historical walk, not a basis for prescribing treatment for yourself.
What survives
The Church of the Apostle Peter survives from Peter’s time. Museum interpretation also covers spring pavilions and later development. Compare dates: modern resort infrastructure, nineteenth-century structures and an early eighteenth-century monument belong to different periods. The site is a changing landscape rather than a single frozen image of Peter’s era.
Museum and walking visit
A museum visit connects buildings with people and events. The official programme includes a walking excursion about the resort’s past and present. Arrange it ahead and confirm the meeting point. For an independent walk, first learn the buildings’ functions, then observe their details and surroundings.
Including it in a journey
Consider Martsialnye Vody alongside Kivach and the Kondopoga area, while accounting separately for travel and museum hours. The branch does not necessarily follow the National Museum’s hours in Petrozavodsk. Historic sightseeing and the sanatorium’s medical services have different conditions. The museum, architecture and an unhurried walk make a useful first visit.
