Girvas: traces of an ancient volcano and the Suna River
A geological landscape near Girvas: lava formations and a transformed river system.

Why it is a palaeovolcano
Girvas exposes traces of ancient volcanic activity. It is not an active mountain with a modern crater, but rock outcrops and remnants altered over a long geological history. Its interest lies in reading stone: recognising layers, flows and fractures, and asking how the landscape formed over immense timescales.
Lava formations
Material from the Karelian Research Centre’s Institute of Geology describes lava tongues, pillow lavas and other volcanic features. A scientific explanation or guided visit is more useful than a dramatic photograph alone. Combine wider views with details so that texture remains connected to the terrain. Leave rock samples in place.
The river and hydraulic structures
The present landscape reflects hydraulic changes to the Suna. Water and exposure of particular sections depend on infrastructure operations, not just the season. A waterfall cannot be promised for a fixed spring date. An operational spillway is not a public walking area: respect barriers and instructions on site.
Preparation and related visits
Girvas belongs to the Kondopoga travel area. Check permitted viewing access, the approach and weather before travelling. Wet rock requires secure footwear and care. Kivach develops the Suna theme, while Martsialnye Vody explores the use of natural resources. Choose stops by interest and leave time to understand what you see.
