Sheltozero: a Vepsian house, language and the Lonin museum
An introduction to Vepsian culture on the southwestern shore of Lake Onega.

Who the Veps are
Vepsian culture is a distinct part of Onega’s history and should not disappear under a general Karelian label. In Sheltozero, begin with language, family occupations and household objects. Comparing it with Kinerma or Olonets reveals the region’s diversity: neighbouring communities maintained their own speech, crafts and domestic traditions.
The Melkin house
The museum occupies the wooden house of merchant Melkin, built in the mid-nineteenth century. The building is part of the interpretation: its scale and working spaces help visitors imagine an extended household. Notice how objects relate to the interior rather than judging them only by age or decoration.
Rurik Lonin and the collection
Rurik Petrovich Lonin collected objects and folklore from Vepsian villages. The first exhibition opened in 1967. Collections cover utensils, weaving, blacksmithing, birch bark and other activities. An everyday object can reveal its raw material, the maker’s skill and the part it played in family life.
Museum and village walk
The branch lists its address as 28 Pochtovaya Street, Sheltozero. Its services include village walks and excursions further afield. Decide whether you want the exhibition or a longer programme, then confirm booking and timing. Allow some unhurried time to observe the village buildings as well.
Practical details
The branch has its own hours, different from the National Museum in Petrozavodsk. Consult Sheltozero’s page, especially before holidays. Free-admission information differs between pages, so confirm any concession directly. Reading about Kinerma and Olonets provides useful context for a broader cultural journey.
