Olonets museum: Livvi Karelians, a fortress and a merchant’s house
The cultural history of Olonets through the museum named after N. G. Prilukin.

The museum and its founder
The Livvi Karelian museum is named after Nikolai Grigoryevich Prilukin and traces its history to 1958. Its local collection connects the town with families, crafts and residents’ memories. For a first visit, choose a few objects and explore their stories rather than trying to give everything the same brief attention.
A merchant’s house and a fortress site
The museum occupies merchant Kuttuyev’s nineteenth-century house in historic Olonets near the meeting of the Olonka and Megrega rivers. The Olonets fortress stood in this area. Distinguish the history of the site from the age of the house: it is not a surviving fortress building. This makes the town’s historical layers clearer.
Livvi Karelian culture
Published museum material presents the themes Fortress Formula and Livvi Karelians. Household objects, clothing and crafts offer concrete ways to discuss family life and language. Compare the experience with Kinerma: a village setting and museum interpretation complement each other, while neither represents the whole of a people’s culture.
Preparing a museum visit
The museum’s official address is 8 30-letiya Pobedy Street, Olonets. In June 2026 it announced a new official website; consult that site or staff for current events and hours. Arrange guided visits and workshops in advance. Afterwards, allow time to explore the historic town in relation to its river landscape.
