Kinerma: houses, chapel and Livvi Karelian traditions
A historic village in the Pryazha area, introducing wooden architecture and rural life.

More than a picturesque facade
Kinerma preserves the traditional wooden buildings of Livvi Karelians. Look beyond individual houses to the village layout: the relationship between buildings, yards and the space around the chapel. This helps explain how rural architecture developed around household work, the climate and the everyday needs of families.
The chapel and wooden houses
The Chapel of Our Lady of Smolensk stands within the historic ensemble. Notice the scale of the houses, their windows and the relationship between living and working spaces. Historic buildings remain part of an inhabited village: private yards and interiors should not be treated as freely accessible museum exhibits.
Food, sauna and crafts
Municipal information describes programmes involving kalitki pastries, traditional dolls and the smoke sauna. Practical activities and hosts’ explanations offer a direct introduction to local traditions. Choose according to your interests and group: a craft session and a short village walk provide different kinds of experience.
Organising a visit
The village is associated with Vedlozero and the Pryazha area. Hosts’ guided programmes require advance arrangements: agree the date, length and activities before travelling, particularly for meals or workshops. Walking through a village and joining a privately organised programme are different types of visit.
What to combine with Kinerma
Kinerma offers an introduction to southern Karelia’s culture. The Olonets museum develops the Livvi Karelian theme, while Sheltozero introduces Vepsian culture. These are separate destinations: select one main visit before calculating road travel. Leave time for questions and conversation rather than rushing between encounters.
