Paaso: a hillfort walk above Sortavala
An archaeological site, a woodland climb and views of the Sortavala area.

What to see
Paaso is a hillfort on Paasonvuori rock near Sortavala. Its setting illustrates how terrain could protect a settlement. A woodland path leads to elevated views, combining landscape with archaeology. Treat it as a surviving historic landscape rather than a reconstructed fortress with towers. Read the information boards along the path; an indoor museum is not the purpose of this visit.
How much time to allow
Our itinerary allows 60–90 minutes for the climb, stops and descent. This is a planning allowance, not a prescribed walking time. Consider everyone’s fitness, footwear and daylight. Allow rest stops with children and do not rush to catch a glimpse of a train. A walk in Sortavala is a useful alternative if the climb does not suit your group.
Approach and trail
The local tourism portal describes an equipped circular trail. Navigate to the current visitor entrance and follow signs on site. A summit reference point is not a parking entrance. Check admission and boardwalk conditions with the operator before leaving. Wood and rock can be slippery after rain or frost; use handrails and postpone the climb in unsuitable weather.
Combining your visit
Paaso can be the first stop on a drive from Sortavala to Akhinkoski and Ruskeala. The full day needs an early start and a free evening. For a relaxed trip, visit the town and Paaso on day one, then the waterfalls and marble canyon on day two. Extra time on the trail will then leave the park visit intact.
