Akhinkoski: Tohmajoki waterfalls on the way to Ruskeala
Cascades and an equipped walking route, a separate stop before the marble canyon.

The waterfalls and park are separate stops
Akhinkoski, also called Ahvenkoski or the Ruskeala waterfalls, are on the Tohmajoki River. They are separate from the Marble Canyon. Allow their own approach, parking and walking time. The local tourism catalogue describes four falls around three to four metres high. Flowing water and rock are best observed from designated visitor areas.
Planning the walk
The driving itinerary allows 45–60 minutes plus a queue allowance. Complete the chosen open trail, stop at viewpoints and then return to the car. Add time in advance for photography. A short path does not make the whole visit equally short: admission, other visitors and viewpoint stops all take time.
Visitor conditions
Art Karelia lists daily hours of 09:00–21:00 and telephone +7 (921) 227-73-75, checked on 28 October 2026. This published schedule does not guarantee every section will be open on your date. Confirm seasonal hours, admission and bridge access before travelling. Snow, ice or maintenance can change the walk. Stay on the open route and behind barriers.
What to combine with the falls
Ruskeala mountain park is a natural continuation and deserves a substantial time block. After a morning climb at Paaso, do not add an island excursion. A two-day plan based in Sortavala is easier for families. In poor weather, shorten the outdoor programme and spend more time in town instead of rushing a slippery trail.
