Kostomukshsky Nature Reserve: Lake Kamennoye and forest trails
Protected nature in western Karelia and guided encounters with the forest.

Lake and taiga
The reserve lies in western Karelia near Kostomuksha. Its administration describes the forests and Lake Kamennoye as habitat for wild forest reindeer. A guided visit also rewards attention to mosses, old trees, water and changes in habitat. Seeing a reindeer is a wildlife encounter, not a guaranteed part of an excursion.
The travelling traders’ story
The Travelling Traders’ Trail connects a forest walk with the history of itinerant trade. It presents the forest as a landscape of old routes and human connections. Ask what goods traders carried, how they chose their paths and how natural conditions shaped their working season. Questions turn a short walk into regional history.
Choosing an excursion
Visits to the reserve require a guide. Alongside shorter programmes, the administration describes a walk to Tsar Rapid and longer itineraries. Match the terrain to participants’ ages and walking experience. Agree on a particular programme: permission for one trail does not mean unrestricted access throughout the protected area.
Using Kostomuksha as a base
Start with the visitor centre and the applicable visiting conditions. Confirm your meeting point, transfers, footwear and equipment before setting off. If your road itinerary allows, reserve separate time for the town or Voknavolok. Kalevalsky National Park shares an administration but has a different regime, so do not assume identical rules.
