Voknavolok: rune singing and the living Karelian language
A western Karelian village where cultural heritage remains connected to everyday life.

An oral tradition
Voknavolok is known as a rune-singing village. Here a rune means a traditional oral song, not a character in an ancient alphabet. Distinguish live performance, collectors’ recordings and the literary arrangement of the Kalevala. This makes the discussion more precise and draws attention to individual performers and their surroundings.
The Village House
The Village House occupies a wooden building dating from 1934. The regional folk culture centre describes workshops, exhibitions and meetings devoted to local culture. It is a useful starting point: before exploring independently, find out which subjects and activities are available and arrange a meeting with staff.
Language and craft
Local initiatives include a Karelian conversation club and craft activities. They show language and skills as part of social life rather than only museum displays. A community club meeting is not automatically a tourist service: agree any attendance and photography with organisers beforehand.
Planning the journey
Consider Voknavolok alongside Kostomuksha and western protected areas, while checking travel and meeting times for each outing. Do not infer festival dates from an old report: fish, fishing and Kalevala Day may inspire events, but current programmes require their own announcement. Leave time for walking and conversation.
