White Sea petroglyphs: scenes from the Stone Age
Rock carvings near Belomorsk: hunting, boats and traces of ancient northern communities.

What petroglyphs are
Petroglyphs are images pecked into rock. The White Sea carvings date to the Neolithic and reveal activities of people who lived here long before modern towns. Pause before examining individual figures: small images often form a shared scene, and a single mark becomes easier to understand alongside its neighbours.
Hunting, water and movement
UNESCO highlights hunting and boating scenes, equipment and human and animal footprints. Use these themes to guide your visit: find a boat, then examine the positions of the figures around it. Interpretations are not always certain, so distinguish your own impression from a conclusion supported by research.
Zalavruga and World Heritage
Zalavruga is one of the names visitors encounter when exploring the White Sea carvings. In 2021 the White Sea and Lake Onega petroglyphs became a single World Heritage property. They are separate destinations: the Onega carvings are in the Pudozh area, rather than on a neighbouring rock near Belomorsk.
Preparing your visit
Belomorsk can serve as your base. Ask the local museum about access to the chosen group of carvings, meeting points and guided visits before arranging transport and your return. Wear footwear with a secure grip: the ground is uneven, while rain and snow affect both visibility and walking conditions.
Protecting the carvings
Observe and photograph from permitted areas. Do not trace carvings with chalk, wet them to increase contrast or try to clean the rock. Children can look for a boat or a footprint without touching the images. A local museum visit provides useful context after seeing the original site.
