The White Sea: petroglyphs, Pomor villages and towns
A thematic collection for planning your own White Sea journey.

Choose a central theme
The White Sea offers several historical scales. Petroglyphs introduce Neolithic communities, Pomor villages reveal maritime livelihoods and wooden architecture, and towns add later history. You need not cover everything at once. Choose your main interest and a base, then add a complementary visit.
Belomorsk and the carvings
For archaeology, start with Belomorsk and the official visiting arrangements for the carvings. Interpretation helps connect figures with whole scenes. Do not reuse the logistics for the Lake Onega petroglyphs: they share World Heritage status but lie in another area. Allow unhurried time for both the site and museum context.
Virma, Sumsky Posad and Kem
Virma and Sumsky Posad add village history; Kem is a separate urban destination. Choose one stop and check access or meetings before assembling a long photographic wish list. A wooden church, historic storehouse and present-day street tell different stories: compare their purposes and relationship with water.
Your own schedule
This collection does not prescribe a fixed number of days. Check rail arrivals, village transfers and guided visits for your dates. Keep a margin for weather and the return journey, especially around water travel. Save suitable places to My trip and use the budget calculator for transport, accommodation and excursions.
