White Bridges — Yukankoski: a waterfall in the Ladoga forests

A waterfall in the Pitkyaranta area whose flow and walking conditions vary with the seasons.

Two names for one place

White Bridges is also known by its historic name, Yukankoski. Search both names when consulting maps, signs and accounts. The waterfall lies in the Pitkyaranta area rather than inside Ruskeala Mountain Park. It requires a separate outing even when both are part of a Northern Ladoga journey.

Height and seasonal character

Karelia’s tourism portal gives the drop as 19 metres. High water differs from low flow, when the water separates into individual streams. Photographs from different months may therefore look very different. Observe the rock, forested slope and canyon as well as the strength of the water.

The final access section

Older directions refer to Leppäsilta and an unpaved road. Treat this as orientation rather than confirmation of present road conditions. Check access, parking and the permitted walking approach before departure. Do not estimate the final section from straight-line distance, particularly after rain or outside the main season.

Walking and photography

Use equipped or permitted viewing areas. Wet rocks and steep banks require care, and a photograph does not justify crossing a barrier. Explain boundaries to children beforehand. From a Sortavala base, allow a substantial part of the day and travel margin rather than squeezing the waterfall between demanding excursions.
