Vottovaara and Pizanets: the national park’s rocky landscapes
A mountain, a lake and remote forests: nature, official trails and preparation.

Several separate areas
Vottovaara National Park was established on 20 October 2023. It includes Mount Vottovaara, Lake Pizanets and the Akhvi–Varguno–Piro hills. These are separate areas rather than one compact walking site. Choose your destination before travelling. Since January 2024 the park has been managed by the Vodlozersky National Park institution.
Rocks and stories
Vottovaara is known for rocky terrain, large boulders and forest scenery. Compare stone shapes, trees and evidence of natural processes rather than seeking a mystical explanation for every feature. The park offers a scientific introduction to the landscape; local legends can be appreciated as a separate cultural layer.
Pizanets offers a different experience
Lake Pizanets is a separate park area. Its water and rocky shores offer a different experience from a mountain ascent. Compare access, walking time, return arrangements and your group’s fitness as well as photographs. The overview point represents Vottovaara and is not an entrance for every park area.
Permits and designated trails
The administration asks visitors to obtain a permit in advance. Official maps and tracks cover designated routes for the mountain and Pizanets. Study the chosen area’s map and current restrictions before arranging transport. A random vehicle track or a point in someone else’s trip report is not a substitute for an authorised route.
Preparing for a remote area
Carry a charged phone, offline map, suitable footwear and spare clothing even in good weather. Plan to return before dark and share your itinerary with someone. The park sets fire and camping rules: an attractive viewpoint is not automatically a campsite. An experienced local guide can be helpful for a first visit.
