A car trip is one of the most convenient ways to get to know Karelia. Many attractions are located outside of major cities, and public transport does not always allow direct access to them.
By car you can choose your own stops, visit small towns, change the program depending on the weather and stop near natural sites.
But Karelia is much larger than it might seem from advertising selections. The distances between popular attractions are sometimes hundreds of kilometers, and some places are completely impossible to visit only by car.
For example, you can get to Ruskeala by road. To visit Valaam you will need water transport. A trip to Kizhi Island also involves a crossing. The Ladoga skerries occupy a large area, so to get to know them you need to select specific accessible areas in advance.
The convenience of car travel largely depends on the correct distribution of days between the road, excursions and rest.
How to choose a route
Karelia can be divided into several tourist destinations.
Northern Ladoga region includes Sortavala, Ruskeala, Ladoga skerries, Valaam and other attractions of the northern coast of Ladoga. This area is especially convenient for travelers from St. Petersburg.
Central Karelia is connected with Petrozavodsk, Lake Onega, Kivach waterfall, Martialnye Vody and the outskirts of Kondopoga.
Zaonezhie is of interest due to its ancient villages, traditional wooden architecture and the ability to get to Kizhi Island.
North Karelia includes Belomorsk, Kem, areas of the White Sea, historical monuments and natural areas. These places require a separate route, since they are located much further than the main tourist centers of the southern and central parts of the republic.
Western Karelia is interesting for its forests, lakes, small settlements and historical territories, but some routes pass close to the state border and require prior check of current restrictions.
You don't have to try to combine everything in one trip. For your first trip, it is much more useful to choose one or two territories and study them in detail.
When is the best time to travel by car?
The time of year significantly influences the choice of route.
Karelia in summer
Summer is considered the most convenient period for automobile tourism. Daylight hours are long, boat excursions, hiking trails and most popular natural sites are available.
In June, white nights are especially noticeable. In the south of Karelia the sun sets, but the duration of twilight is long, so it remains light for a long time in the evening.
July and August are suitable for trips to lakes, water excursions and outdoor recreation. However, on popular dates the load on hotels, roads and tourist sites increases.
During summer weekends it is advisable to book accommodation and excursions in advance with limited availability.
Karelia in autumn
September and early October are interesting for photographing forests and lakes.
On slopes covered with mixed forests, a combination of yellow, orange and green shades appears. Autumn trees look especially expressive next to dark coniferous forests and rocky shores.
The car makes it possible to stop at different observation points without being tied to the tourist bus schedule.
However, in autumn the likelihood of rain, fog and night frosts increases. Daylight hours are decreasing and some aquatic programs are ending their season.
Karelia in winter
In winter, the roads of Karelia pass through snow-covered forests, frozen lakes and small settlements.
This is a beautiful, but more challenging season to drive on your own.
Temperatures can vary markedly between the southern and northern parts of the republic. In addition to frost, it is necessary to take into account ice, snowfall, decreased visibility and lack of daylight.
Before a long trip, it is important to check the technical condition of the car, winter tires, heating system and battery charge.
It is advisable to have a supply of fuel, warm clothing and communications equipment.
You should not plan a long drive on unknown secondary roads in the dark, especially if the forecast is bad.
Karelia in spring
In spring, waterfalls, melting snow, changes in river flow and the awakening of forests are interesting.
But it is in the spring that problems with dirt roads may arise. After the snow melts, some areas are washed away, deep puddles and difficult places for a passenger car appear.
If you plan to visit a remote natural site, you must first find out the condition of the entrance.
You should not rely only on a photograph of the road taken in the summer.
Main roads
The federal highway A-121 “Sortavala” leads from St. Petersburg to Sortavala.
This is one of the main road routes in the Northern Ladoga region. The road passes through areas of the Leningrad region and further through the territory of Karelia.
For trips to Petrozavodsk from St. Petersburg, the main direction is the federal highway R-21 “Kola” with subsequent access to the city.
These driving destinations are important for tourism infrastructure. They are also included in regional plans for the development of automobile tourism.
When planning, it is necessary to take into account not only the mileage, but also the quality of a particular site.
The difference between 100 kilometers on a federal road and the same distance on a narrow dirt road can be very large.
From St. Petersburg to Sortavala
This is one of the most convenient routes for a short trip.
From St. Petersburg they leave in the direction of Priozersk, after which they continue along A-121.
The length of the road to Sortavala is about 260–270 kilometers.
With good traffic, the journey takes approximately four hours, but in practice it is useful to allow more time.
Along the road there are forested areas, settlements, lakes and beautiful views.
You should not stop directly on the roadway or side of the road for the sake of photography. When stopping, you need to choose safe places where parking is permitted.
If you travel on a weekend, especially in summer, there may be delays at the exit from St. Petersburg and on certain sections of the route.
From St. Petersburg to Petrozavodsk
Petrozavodsk is located further from St. Petersburg than Sortavala.
Therefore, during a short trip, it is necessary to decide in advance which region of Karelia interests you more.
If the main goal is Ruskeala, skerries and Valaam, it is more convenient to build a route through Sortavala.
If you are interested in Petrozavodsk, Kivach, Marcialnye Vody and Kizhi, it is wiser to go directly to the capital of Karelia.
For a trip of four to five days, you can combine both territories, but travel between them must be taken into account.
From Moscow to Karelia
Traveling from Moscow requires more time.
If the trip is limited to three days, a significant portion of the vacation may be spent on travel alone.
Therefore, for a road trip from Moscow, it is better to allow at least five to seven days or combine rail transport with renting a car on the spot.
This will allow you to get tired less and spend more time directly in Karelia.
It is especially important for a driver to plan rest during a long journey. There is no need to try to compensate for a late departure by driving at night without sleep.
Three-day itinerary: Northern Ladoga region
For a trip from St. Petersburg for three days, I would choose Sortavala and its surroundings.
Day 1. St. Petersburg — Sortavala
In the morning, departure from St. Petersburg.
After arrival, accommodation in a hotel or guest house, lunch and a walk through the historical center.
During the day you can see old architecture, get acquainted with the history of the city and go up to Vakkosalmi Park.
In the evening - a walk near Ladoga, dinner and rest.
The advantage of such a day is that after the road you do not need to immediately drive another few tens of kilometers.
Day 2. Ruskeala and surroundings
In the morning, departure to the Ruskeala mountain park.
It is better to allocate several hours to explore the main objects.
If you are interested in the history of marble mining and underground routes, you need to book a tour in advance.
On the way, you can stop near Ahvenkoski, if the object is accessible for visiting.
After returning - free evening in Sortavala.
Day 3. Ladoga and return
In the morning you can choose a boat trip along the permitted route in the Ladoga skerries.
If weather conditions are unfavorable or water excursions are not available, it is better to use the land program.
After lunch - return to St. Petersburg.
This route allows you to get acquainted with the city, industrial monument and Ladoga nature without excessive load.
Five-day itinerary: Sortavala and Petrozavodsk
Five days allow you to see a more diverse Karelia.
First day
Trip from St. Petersburg to Sortavala. Inspection of the historical center and Vakkosalmi park.
Overnight in Sortavala.
Second day
Ruskeala Mountain Park, history of marble quarries, walks in the surrounding area.
Overnight in the Sortavala area.
Third day
Choose from: Valaam or a boat trip along the Ladoga skerries.
This must be a separate day as weather conditions and boat schedules significantly affect the program.
Overnight in Sortavala.
Fourth day
Moving to Petrozavodsk.
You can choose suitable stops along the way, but you should not try to see all natural objects at the same time.
After arrival, take a walk along Onega Embankment and get to know the city.
Overnight in Petrozavodsk.
Fifth day
The choice of program depends on the return departure time.
You can go to the Kivach waterfall, visit Marcial Waters or devote a day to Petrozavodsk.
A trip to Kizhi will require separate organization and often a full day, so it should not be mechanically included on the last day of the trip if there is a long journey home.
Seven days itinerary
When traveling for a week, you can distribute your time more calmly.
The first three days - Northern Ladoga region: Sortavala, Ruskeala and one water route.
Day four - transfer to Petrozavodsk.
Fifth day - Kivach and surroundings.
The sixth day is a separate trip to Kizhi Island, if the season and transport schedule allows.
The seventh day - free time and return journey.
This route already includes a significant part of the main attractions of southern and central Karelia.
In this case, it is better to leave one of the days flexible. If the flight to Kizhi or Valaam is cancelled, the program can be restructured.
What natural sites are convenient for motorists?
Ruskeala Mountain Park has a developed tourist infrastructure and relatively convenient access.
Kivach is also a good option for a car excursion.
Many waterfalls and natural places remote from main roads require a more careful approach.
There is no need to automatically include an object in the route just because the navigator shows a short distance from the route.
The quality of the access road, seasonality, environmental regulations and parking availability should be taken into account.
For some attractions, the last section may only be suitable for certain vehicles or pedestrian access.
Road trips with children
It is better to build a family route with a small number of crossings.
If you change hotels every day and travel for four to five hours, even an interesting trip can quickly tire your child.
For a family with small children, it is convenient to choose two main accommodation locations: for example, Sortavala and Petrozavodsk.
You can take short excursions from each city.
It is useful to alternate between cultural and natural sites. After the museum, a walk in the park or a short rest by the lake is a good idea.
It is necessary to take into account the availability of toilets, cafes, medical care and the ability to quickly return to the hotel.
What you need to take on the road
First of all, documents, money, bank cards, necessary medicines and means of communication.
Your vehicle will benefit from a working spare tire or manufacturer-provided repair kit, pump, hazard warning lights and chargers.
In Karelia, it is advisable to have offline maps. Mobile communications may be absent on some forest roads and remote natural areas.
For hiking, you need comfortable shoes, rain clothing and protection from insects.
In summer, mosquitoes, midges and ticks are found in the forest. Before traveling, make sure you have suitable protection.
In autumn and winter, you additionally need warm clothes, since the temperature and feeling of cold can differ greatly from city weather.
Gas stations and road stops
There are gas stations on main federal roads.
But as you move away from large populated areas, their number decreases.
It is especially important to refuel in advance before driving on secondary roads.
This also applies to trips towards Oyatevshchina, from where some crossings to Kizhi are organized. The museum itself warns about the absence of gas stations along a significant section of this route.
It must be taken into account that the navigator may offer shortcuts on roads whose quality does not meet the driver’s expectations.
If the road situation is unknown, it is better to choose a longer but proven route.
How to plan expenses
The cost of a car trip consists of several parts.
The main expenses are fuel, accommodation, food, paid attractions, boat excursions and additional transportation services.
Let's say a car consumes 8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. For a route of 1000 kilometers, approximately 80 liters will be required.
This is just a calculated example. Actual consumption depends on vehicle, driving style, load, road conditions and weather.
To estimate the total budget, you should separately calculate the cost of each overnight stay and paid excursions.
For example, a visit to Ruskeala, Kivach and a boat trip to Valaam have fundamentally different costs.
When traveling with several passengers, a car becomes more economical due to the distribution of transport costs, but the cost of tickets to sites usually depends on the number of people.
Common mistakes
One of the main mistakes is trying to see all the famous sights in three days.
On the map it seems that Kizhi, Valaam, Ruskeala and Kivach are in the same region, which means they can be easily combined.
But there are significant distances between objects, and trips to the islands require transfers to water transport.
The second mistake is not having enough time for bad weather.
The third is booking remote accommodation without checking the access road.
The fourth is an attempt to travel unfamiliar natural routes at a late time.
Fifth - ignoring the rules of specially protected natural areas.
A convenient car route always includes not only the attractions themselves, but also realistic rest and travel time.
a car allows you to see Karelia with maximum freedom, but does not eliminate the need for planning. For your first trip, just choose Northern Ladoga region or Petrozavodsk and its surroundings. A longer route can be built gradually, combining territories and saving time for a relaxing exploration of the region.
