History of Karelia: from rock art to cities
Main historical layers and places where they can be seen.
Ancient monuments
Petroglyphs of the White Sea and Lake Onega are traces of human life long before the emergence of modern cities. Getting to know them requires attention to protecting the surface of the rocks: images should not be outlined, tinted or damaged. It's best to start with the museum's explanation of the context.
Wooden Heritage
The Kizhi churchyard combines the Transfiguration and Intercession churches with a bell tower. The museum exhibition is wider than the graveyard itself: peasant houses, outbuildings and craft demonstrations help to understand the structure of life in Zaonezhie.
Frontier and industrial history
The history of the Northern Ladoga region is associated with changes in borders and relocations. In Sortavala this layer is noticeable in public buildings of different eras. Another subject is industry: the marble developments of Ruskeala, the history of Petrozavodsk and paper production. The history of the region should not be reduced to one national tradition or only to natural attractions.
