Culture of Karelia: languages, runes, crafts and cuisine
How to experience local traditions through museums and live programs.
Different traditions
Karelian, Vepsian, Russian and Pomor cultures intersect in the region. They cannot be represented as one unchanging set of customs. Languages, religious history, everyday things and methods of farming differ by territory.
Runes singing and "Kalevala"
The epic "Kalevala" is associated with the collection and literary treatment of runic songs by Elias Lönnrot. The village of Kalevala and the western territories of Karelia help to get acquainted with this cultural context. It is important to distinguish between folk oral tradition and published literary text.
Dating practice
In Kizhi, choose crafts programs and museum demonstrations; in Petrozavodsk, choose the exhibitions of the National Museum. To get acquainted with the cuisine, check the composition of the dishes and the origin of the products; a popular name on a menu does not in itself confirm the local recipe. Check the dates of concerts, master classes and holidays in the organizer's poster.
